Workplace/ Occupational Hearing Conservation Programs
Did you know: The World Health Organization reports that noise-induced hearing loss is the most common work-related injury in the world. Not only is noise induced hearing loss the most common work-related injury in the world, it's also highly preventable. Taking the necessary precautions in preventing workplace injuries can lead to lower commercial insurance premiums, higher workplace efficiency, and most importantly, safer and happier employees.
In Ontario, employers have a duty to provide a safe work environment and take all reasonable precautions to protect the health and safety of employees and others in the workplace. A hearing conservation program is an excellent way for employers to reduce the risk of noise induced hearing loss at the workplace.
When is a hearing conservation program recommended? Employers should implement a hearing conservation program if workers are exposed to sounds at or above 85 decibels (A). Some noises that are 85 dB(A) include a window air conditioner unit, heavy traffic, or a busy restaurant. Most power tools tend to be well above 85 dB(A). For example, a sander is around 95 dB(A), and a welder is around 90 dB(A).
