Earplugs: The Easiest Costume Add-On

Halloween is a holiday that runs on sound. There is the DJ at the costume party, the screaming when a haunted house actor jumps out of the dark, and the sound effects cranked up to make every creak and shriek land harder. It is all part of the fun, but by the end of the night, a loud Halloween event can leave your ears working overtime.

Busy parties and clubs can easily push sound levels into the range where hearing can be stressed, especially over several hours. The inner ear's hair cells are delicate structures, and very loud sound, whether it lasts all evening or arrives in a sudden blast like a scare effect beside your ear, can leave them temporarily fatigued. That fatigue often shows up as ringing in the ears or a muffled, underwater feeling after the music stops. For most people it fades by morning, but it is a sign the night was harder on your ears than it felt at the time.

The good news is that the fix costs almost nothing and takes two seconds: earplugs. Basic foam plugs lower the volume across the board, while high-fidelity or musician-style plugs are designed to reduce sound more evenly, so the music still sounds like music and conversations stay clear, just at a safer level. They are small enough to disappear into almost any costume, and many come on a cord or in colours that can pass as part of the outfit.

A few habits make the night even easier on your ears. Take listening breaks: step into a quieter room or head outside for a few minutes every so often, since ears handle noise better with pauses. Keep some distance from the speakers, because sound levels drop quickly as you move away, so a few steps back can make a real difference. And if little monsters are part of the plan, remember that children's events, school dances, and haunted attractions can be just as loud, so a pair of well-fitting plugs or earmuffs belongs in their costume kit too.

Treat any ringing, fullness, or muffled hearing the next morning as information rather than an inconvenience. If it has not cleared within a day or two, or if loud events regularly leave your ears ringing, a hearing assessment can establish a baseline and catch early changes. Noise-related hearing changes are linked to repeated exposure over time, which is exactly why building protection into the fun nights is worth it.

This Halloween, add earplugs to the costume checklist alongside the face paint and the candy bucket. Your future self, still hearing every punchline at next year's party, will thank you.
